Don’t Forget These 3 Maintenance Items — It Will Cost You

July 17th, 2018 by

Maintenance is one of the most important parts of vehicle ownership as failure to maintain your vehicle leads to your vehicle living a short life. But maintenance goes beyond just oil changes. Here are three oft-forgotten but very important maintenance items.

Automatic Transmission Fluid

Your vehicle’s automatic transmission uses a fluid as a hydraulic oil, cleaner, and cooler. This fluid becomes contaminated and worn down with age, and it needs replacing at regular intervals. Failure to change this fluid according to the manufacturer’s recommendations could result in pricey transmission repairs.

Most manufacturers recommend a flush or a filter and fluid replacement once every 40,000 to 60,000 miles. Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for specifics.

Brake Fluid

The brake fluid transfers the pressure you place on the brake pedal to the brake system to slow the vehicle down. This oil withstands a lot of heat, but it does absorb water from the atmosphere, leading to reduced boiling points. If the fluid boils, it can release air in the system or do other damage. Also, water causes damage to the brake lines, which can result in brake failure. Exchanging the fluid is the only way to remove the water from the system.

Many manufacturers do not list a recommended service interval for the brake fluid, but most technicians will suggest swapping it out every 60,000 miles.

Engine Coolant

Engine coolant is responsible for maintaining the engine’s temperature. Because it deals with high levels of heat, this fluid breaks down and needs replacing. If you do not replace it according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, this fluid can congeal and potentially clog the cooling system.

Every manufacturer has its own recommendations to coolant-exchange intervals, so check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for details. Most manufacturer recommend doing this service once every 60,000 to 80,000 miles.
